Visualizing Extermination

Even as the data presented in the previous page helps us get some idea of the geography of killing in Afghanistan in 1979, an animated representation of the same data may prove more vivid and helpful in understand the dynamics of killing. This video below - produced by stitching together dozens of maps of mass killing produced in ARCMap - represents a preliminary attempt to do that. The video shows how the geography of killing changed over time in Afghanistan during the last months of the Taraki regime; it also keeps a count of how many people were murdered on each day recorded in the Death Lists.
